Gingerbread House and other Christmas Goodies

Well I think its time to come out of my sewing room and show you what I have been making! I've been a busy little crafting bee the last week or so and have made some new goodies which I hope will find wonderful new homes in time for Christmas....

I have made this very Christmassy hand quilted "Gingerbread House" wall hanging, each tab has been secured with a cute little iced Gingerbread button. It measures approx. 20" x 24" (50 x 61cm) and is for sale at £16.95 on my website The Homespun Loft

I have also made some matching smaller hangings below, measuring 12" x 12" (31 x 31cm) each priced at £10.95 which includes the wire hanger and mini wooden pegs

You might like these Primitive "Christmas Cat" wall hangings shown below. They are only £8.95 each, including the wire hanger and pegs too. They measure 9" x 9" (23 x 23cm)

Now for something slightly different...my homemade spicy mug mats. I love making these, the house smells so good. I am selling these for £5.95 per pair and you will receive them gift wrapped in ribbon and a cellophane bag.

"Dear Jane" Civil War fabric

Hello my friends, we have had a very unseasonal mini heat wave here the last few days with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees, it wasn't even that hot in the Summer. I had planned to venture up into the Loft and search for all of my Autumn and Halloween boxes and spend the weekend decorating the house (I've been very good to wait this long!) but as the weather was so hot over the weekend I'm postponing until next weekend when the weather will hopefully be far more appropriate!

Meanwhile I have had a delivery of some more gorgeous Civil War fabrics! Now I know some of you lovely quilting ladies will be familiar with the "Dear Jane" II Collection of fabrics by Brenda Papadakis for Windham, but I would love to fill in a little background history for those of you yet to discover these beautiful fabrics.

Dear Jane II fabric by Brenda Pakadalis for Windham

In 1863 during the American Civil War a lady named Jane Stickle completed a beautiful sampler quilt, 169 blocks and 5602 pieces in total. Jane signed her quilt with the following "In War Time, 1863, pieces 5602, Jane A. Stickle" It stayed in her family for generations and was eventually donated to the Bennington Museum in Vermont where it is still on display and can be seen every September and October.

Brenda Papadakis meticulously researched the history of Jane and her quilt and has produced these stunning reproduction fabrics for Windham Fabrics. I am so happy to have the two panels shown at the top available to buy in my store The Homespun Loft

I love a bargain!

Just a silly post! I wanted to show you a couple of bargains that I got last week. I was browsing in the Tavistock Pannier Market and came across this gorgeous little leaf brooch sitting in a jewellery cabinet calling to me!.

It measures approx 3" and I fell in love with it straight away, when I found out it could be mine for only £3 the deal was done!

and these 5" embroidery thread cones are in the most beautiful Autumn colours, my lovely Mum picked them up for me for only 50p each in a sale, I'm so pleased with them, thanks Mum! x

Can't wait to use them :0)

Blowing away the cobwebs!

Hello lovely friends, its been a little while (too long) since I posted but I have not been idle I promise! I have spent more time the last month sewing than I have done in quite some time. Usually all of my time is spent on the computer updating my sites but a little step change does you good one in a while and I have really enjoyed the peace that sewing brings. I have completed a large order for wall hangings, I am making goodies to sell at a show, details of which I will share with you all next week, in case any of you crafty readers are local and can pop in to say hello :0)

My daughter is taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme at bronze level, so wanted to get in some practise walks and map reading skills . Hubby was going to take her out on his own to let me get on with things but it was a lovely day on Sunday and I needed to blow away the cobwebs, you know how it feels.

We went, not very far, to our local Burrator Reservoir which really is a fantastic beauty spot. Normally it is my running route, you can run or cycle around the whole reservoir it is about 3.5 miles, but this time we went off the beaten track and I couldn't resist taking some piccies to show you

Really starting to feel Autumn in the now, love it, my favourite time of the year. Can't wait to decorate up for the Season and get the Autumn decs out of the loft and get busy with pumpkins...I'll show you when its done.

One final thing, for now, I am really enjoying these flowers in my kitchen and can't get over the amazing colours, these were grown in a neighbours's garden and kindly given to me.

Advice from a Tree....

We are now full swing into the Summer Holidays and my Daughter Molly May is making the most of not having to get up at the crack of dawn every day for school, and I don't blame her one bit!

I don't shut the shop, it is open throughout and MM is kind enough to help out and old enough to not need constant supervision!

When she broke up last week her Form Tutor gave her this beautiful card

MM really took to this lady and is going to sadly miss her. I love the wording on the card and hope you don't mind me sharing it with you.

MM was so full of excitement she nearly popped as it was also her Birthday over the weekend and she has reached the grand old age of 15! She most carefully made these beautiful cupcakes, baked them one evening and decorated the next, all her own work, she was so pleased with them and they were delicious!

We had 6 of her friends staying for a sleepover...yes I can guess what you are thinking :0) it does sound a lot!!! but actually they are all lovely lovely girls, they treated the place with respect and left the place as neat as a new pin!

We were lucky enough to be invited for a lovely Supper/theatre night with some friends on Saturday. They chose the show and picked a really good one Jekyll and Hyde The Musical . We loved it and had such a great time and hope we can get together again soon. I did my little bit of baking too and took this Strawberry cake round to our friends and promised MM that I would take a photo for my blog!!!

For a change the sun is actually out today....so I will finish now, do some more work and hopefully sit out in the late afternoon sun with a nice glass of wine!

Keep calm and carry on!

Hello my friends, nice to be back blogging again. Sorry for the delay in posting, life gets in the way you know how it is! Never really thought I would use the expression "keep calm and carry on" but this last week or so it has made total sense to me.

My computer died on the 1st of July :0( so after a few very tense moments (okay more than a few!) my lovely daughter kindly offered to lend me her laptop, well she knew about it when she got home from school and I was on it! I'm still on it 12 days later (poor daughter) and I'm managing fine. My lovely hubby sorted me out and showed me the ropes etc and as long as I have internet access I can still run my business. Trouble is all of my emails/pictures/files/accounts... everything....are still stuck on the hard drive of my old computer. I do pay monthly for tech support who said they could fix the computer but didn't say (until I asked) that they would automatically wipe the hard drive of all the information before even attempting a fix and I would get a blank computer back. They said I should have backed everything up, which is done on the computer but no use if you can't switch it on to retrieve it! Needless to say I declined their kind offer to wipe my computer!

Lesson learnt, I will buy another external hard drive to back everything onto so if the computer goes bang again I still have access to all my files. £40/£50 for an additional hard drive is a small price to pay for piece of mind. Luckily I have given my computer to a lovely chap who is fixing it as we speak and doesn't use a "sledge hammer to crack a nut" approach...unlike the tech support!

Pumpkin Path

As you may know I am mad about pumpkins and everything "pumpkinny" I saw this fabric in my work room "calling" to me and decided to turn it into more wall hangings!

This is a good size hanging measuring 20" x 23" (not including the tabs). I added a few Autumn leaves and Pumpkins from my "Dress it up" button range. It is for sale on my website priced at £29.99 which includes the three heart wire hanger and wooden dowel.

From similar fabric I made this smaller hanging, again scattered with a few Autummy buttons. This measures 12" x12" and priced at £11.95 includes the heart hanger and mini pegs.

While we are talking Pumpkins, I came across this cute blog Thanksgiving by Prairie Harvest Arts Full of interesting facts about the History of Thanksgiving and yummy recipes. I'm going to have a good read and find out more about it as unfortunately we don't celebrate it over here :0( and it always look so good!

My lovely Hubby could see that I have been struggling to find homes for all of my fabric bolts. I had run out of room and needed more shelves,

so...look what he made me at the weekend!!

I was given this lovely "Homespun Loft" bunting as a gift, it's so cute and sits perfectly above the fabrics

All neat on day one...

It has made a big difference already, I needed this extra space and can now keep more fabric collections together.

He's even asking if I would like some more!!! :0)

My trip to London to see The Royal Wedding!!

Hello lovely THL friends. I have just had the most enjoyable few days away in London joining the 1 million other people who decided to make the trip into London and celebrate The Royal Wedding! I hope you will enjoy looking at some of our family snaps of the occasion!

We arrived in London Thursday afternoon and went straight to Buckingham Palace to see the sites before the Wedding the next morning.

We took full advantage of the roads being closed and wandered around outside Buckingham Palace and along The Mall where many people had been camping for days to get the perfect vantage point!

Castle Drogo Centenery Celebration

Hello friends of The Homespun Loft, lovely to be back on here blogging again. Something a little different to show you, would love to share some photos I took on our last day trip. We are members of The National Trust and love visiting the historic houses and gardens around the area we live. Recently it was the 100th Anniversary of one of the properties Castle Drogo which is situated in Drewsteignton, near Exeter, Devon. This was the last castle to be built in England, commissioned by Julius Drewe, and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The building is entirely made from granite and has beautiful gardens that we wandered through.

Spring has Sprung!

I think I have spent too long cuddled up in front of the fire! I can't believe it is a month since my last post lovely readers. I haven't been idle I promise, there is always plenty to do and I have been busy working on both of my websites re-stocking, listing, ordering and making. I have finished some lovely homespun heart raggy hangers which are one of my most favourite things to make. I have a scrap basket the height of the house and I love diving into it to find the perfect fabric for the next project, well what else is one to do with all of those end of bolts!

I feel inspired by the change in weather. We have have had the most glorious unbroken sunshine here on Dartmoor for the last couple of days. Still a little ice on the car this morning, but deep blue cloudless skies all day. Miss Homespun, my lovely girl is finding it so much easier to get up for school now the dark mornings have passed!

It was so very tempting to spend some time gardening but I knew it would be so chilly in the shade and I really have too much work to do, instead I enjoyed the weather as a spectator through the window.

Definitely time to change the background on here, I found this gorgeous vintage Easter template from Plumrose Lane and couldn't resist! Snowflakes have been banished until November I think and I have introduced some fluttery butterflies to the site, one beautiful butterfly brushed it's wings against the kitchen window this morning and I knew that Spring had sprung! xx

Just got this out of the loft...ready for Advent!

"Long time no see" lovely blog friends! I have had a busy busy time recently stocking the shop with new goodies, but have sneaked a few moments to make my blog all Christmassy. It is snowing in my blog! but not yet on Dartmoor where I live, much to my Daughter's disappointment There is snow on the hills and an Siberian blast promised...so watch this space!

Hubby kindly went up into the loft tonight and brought down my Daughter's Advent Calendar.

I made this calendar for my daughter 13 years ago...every year chocolates are bought well in advance and within minutes of it's appearance it has been transformed from this

into this!.......

Now all she has to do is wait until Wednesday morning!

A little bit of Dartmoor...

Hello again my lovely friends! A little while ago Laurie from Cat Haven Crafts mentioned it might be nice to see some pictures of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, where I live. Well last time I went out I took my camera with me, as it was a beautifully sunny day, and took a few snaps!

These are all taken around the area 2 minutes from my home. Of course there are more wild and rugged areas of Dartmoor a few miles down the road, but this is the route I have driven every day for the last 12 years since I moved to Dartmoor. This is my school/ballet run!!

A little time away....

Having just taken time out from work and blogging (well apart from processing orders!) for 10 days, it's back to work! This is never hard for me, I love my job and have to be dragged off the computer by my wonderful and understanding hubby and daughter!! love you xx

We decided to go camping in beautiful Porthleven in Cornwall. Glorious sunshine for the first few days. A bit of beach time one day (we were only 10 minutes walk from the village and beach)

This was our campsite, really nice, no frills. Run by the most lovely friendly couple Martin and Lisa

Then a walk across the fields down to the village and beach.

A trip to glorious Mousehole the next day. Mousehole has to be one of my most favourites places to be, we used to holiday there when I was a child, visiting it again brought back wonderful memories.

Then I'm afraid the weather set in and it was rain, rain and more rain and a soggy tent!

But despite the weather, we had a lovely relaxing time. Our neighbour County; Cornwall, really is stunning...we'll be back soon.

Couldn't resist this one!!

Whilst out and about this week, I spied this wonderful quilt which I could not resist, a bargain at £20! The colours are so warm and cosy, I have put it as a cloth for my sewing table. Terribly impractical I know, I will lose pins...needles...probably won't even be able to find my work on it! but I don't care, it gives me joy and isn't that what life is all about! Amazing Wizard of Oz quilt!

This is a wonderful quilt made by such a nice lady called Lynda from Hookinwithlaalaa . Apparently this is her first quilt...well done, great work! A very original piece. Lynda finished her quilt using fabrics from my store and I thought it would be lovely to include this fantastic quilt in my "Customer Corner!" Thank you Lynda.

Jan, one of my dear customers, has a great blog called Knitsmith she kindly got in touch to show me this wonderful quilt that she has made using fabric bought from my store. Isn't it lovely!

The fabric she chose for her lap quilt is a fabulous one from Teresa Kogut.

I thought it is a such a nice idea to share photos of each other's finished projects. Lovely Lynda from hookinwithlaalaa gave me the idea to have a "Customer's corner!" Great idea Lynda...thank you. I'll be sharing the quilt that Lynda made in a minute!

I love seeing what happens to the fabric that I send out and am so happy to show photos of finished (or work in progress!) from any customer.

Well...here I am in the beginning of August finding that I am longing for Autumn! We did have hope of a wonderful Summer but all hope seems lost with this constant drizzle we now have on Dartmoor on a daily basis. I am finding myself getting cosy already, especially on days like today with the wind whistling in the trees and a definite nip in the air. I have just taken a deep breath (and a sip of wine!) and joined the wonderful world of blogging!

What a generous choice of backgrounds there are available to choose, I went straight to the Fall section, only another month and Pumpkins will be proudly displayed!
